The Letter of Authorization for the Redbird FMX describes the applicable FARs for logging time toward certificates, ratings, and recent experience.

NOTE!! The current amount of allowed time logged toward an instrument rating is 10 hours. This topic is still under review by the FAA.
Terminology
A quick note about the terminology used throughout this website: The terms simulator and AATD are not used interchangeably in FAA documentation; they are two different things. For practicality, we routinely refer to our Redbird FMX AATD as a simulator; however, it is important to know the difference in the terms when reading FAA material, so that you understand what time can be credited toward your certificate, rating, or recent experience.
According to FAA Advisory Circular 61-136A an AATD is a device that:
” . . . (3) Provides an adequate training platform for both procedural and operational performance tasks specific to the ground and flight training requirements for Private Pilot Certificate, instrument rating, Commercial Pilot Certificate, and Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate, and Flight Instructor Certificate per parts 61 and 141.
(4) Provides an adequate platform and design for both procedural and operational performance tasks required for instrument experience, the instrument proficiency check, and pilot time . . .”
Please click here to view the Redbird FMX Letter of Authorization for more detail. The LOA refers to specific FARs for further reading.
Please click here to read Advisory Circular AC 61-136A “FAA Approval of Aviation Training Devices and Their Use for Training and Experience.”
If you have questions regarding the applicability of AATD time toward the certificate or rating you are pursuing, please call us or discuss it with your instructor prior to purchasing time.
Flight schools and independent instructors please call 301-800-9951 for more information.
Flight schools are welcome to integrate the use of our simulator into their existing curriculum. We can help you create flight scenarios of your own design!
Please be aware that Part 141 schools may need additional FAA approval if simulator use was not part of the original approval.
We are open to the general public! Our flight simulator is an Advanced Aviation Training Device approved by the FAA to train pilots. That means our simulator gives a very realistic flying experience that can be appreciated by just about anyone who has an interest in flying.
